How many people wish they were someone else or could act a certain way different than the world sees them. She created a life to live in where no one knew who she truly was, that was until she met and desired something else. He was simply doing a friend a favor, checking up on a girl for his boss's fiance, who may need a little help, and she fell literally right into his arms. Instant attraction, plenty of lust, and a night neither wants to forget. Fast foward, he saves her from an unwanted wedding arrangement, but she saves him back in more ways than one. So I made it through the prologue and half of chapter one...if that, and realized this was going to suck. This book reads like some kind of gumshoe, private detective inner monologue story. It starts out with the main character walking around his penthouse in that weird way. Looking out the window and thinking things like: ‘An older man was sniffing around making her uncomfortable “, “I became the predator, I smile thinly as I chuckle’, “I know damn well I should walk-no, run away from this line I’ve blurred’. I totally pictured the scene in my head in black and white with that 1950’s detective movie vibe. Then, I noticed the author would repeat certain phrases like ‘the line being crossed’, ‘a line was crossed’, ‘crossing the line’ and ‘run away from this line I’ve blurred’. Another one I noticed was ‘he staggered out of the elevator’ ‘then stumbled like a drunk into the room’, then it repeats how he ‘stumbles through the room’ some more, then he ‘staggers into his office’. All these within the same few sentences. When I finally had to throw in the towel was when he says ‘myself and a few heavy-handed guys knocked in the door of these clowns’ clubhouse’. Who says that? No one! Especially not someone that’s supposed to be a stone-cold Russian mafia alpha male.Needless to say I’ve returned it for a refund.
